At the End of the Hidden Greenery - Chapter 276
“Roles?”
“Yes. We don’t really form communities as large as the ones in Caranazion, but even so, a village can’t function unless everyone has something they’re responsible for.”
“Like how Lanceil usually handles security, while Lancet and Arven take care of hunting?”
“Exactly.”
Tevon helped out with whatever caught his interest, while Night primarily handled the night watch. Others looked after the farms, maintained the village, organized supplies, or devoted themselves to research and preserving knowledge.
“So everyone’s job is fixed?”
“Not necessarily. They’re quite flexible.”
Callan smiled lightly before adding with a teasing tone,
“To put it simply… the ones with fewer pressing duties are the ones who end up spending the most time with you. Just look at me. I used to be the village healer, but thanks to you, I’m practically unemployed now, so naturally I get to spend the most time with you.”
Of course, Callan was also the one who could explain things to Jiwoo in the clearest way. Hearing that only deepened her curiosity.
“Then… what’s Quillon’s role?”
Thinking about it, Quillon treated every one of his brothers with equal courtesy and seemed to get along well with all of them.
If she recalled his usual work, he often handled scouting and hunting beyond the village. Yet she had also seen him crafting weapons and jewelry.
The more she thought about it, the more it made sense.
Those responsible for gathering information from other settlements, exchanging goods with neighboring villages, or scouting Jiwoo’s future destinations naturally spent much of their time away from home.
The researchers were similar.
Skiass tended to stay shut away in his workshop, but Enci frequently traveled to other regions. That was why he had been away the first time Jiwoo met everyone.
Although the children of Ellandos often appeared closed off and suspicious of outsiders, they weren’t actually isolated from groups they trusted.
They regularly exchanged goods and knowledge, and occasionally even visited each other simply to maintain friendships.
Considering Quillon had apparently been going around punching members of other groups, he probably wasn’t the one responsible for diplomacy.
“So Quillon is…”
For the first time, Callan hesitated before answering a question about the village.
“I suppose… he was originally in charge of seduction.”
“In charge of seduction?”
She had never heard of such a position before.
“Yes. Haven’t you noticed that Quillon is especially striking and takes exceptional care with his appearance?”
“I did think he was very handsome.”
Visually, he really did resemble a blooming canna flower.
But judging by the way Quillon behaved around her, seduction was the last word she would have used.
“What exactly does that involve?”
“Pretty much what you’re imagining. First, someone whose appearance naturally draws attention. Someone sociable. And if I may add my own opinion, someone exceptionally skilled with words.”
If it hadn’t been Jiwoo, these were the people who would have been tasked with courting the tree’s incarnation.
Considering what incarnations fundamentally were, perhaps it meant being someone who could easily adapt to any culture and make anyone feel at ease.
In other words, someone who could fit in anywhere. Seeing how effortlessly Quillon got along with every one of his brothers, it wasn’t an inaccurate description.
“So… because he got married before he ever had to seduce anyone, did he lose his purpose and end up wandering around?”
“No. I already told you. No one has only one role, and none of them are fixed. It’s simply that each person has things they’re particularly suited for. Strictly speaking, Solmih is also one of our designated seducers.”
Solmih certainly possessed the elegant grace of a rose so that made sense.
That thought naturally brought another handsome face to mind.
“Then, Enci too?”
“In theory, yes…”
Enci’s looks certainly qualified. His personality, however, made the answer rather less straightforward.
“But in the end, the results speak for themselves.”
After all, Enci had successfully won Jiwoo’s heart.
“Was that what you were worried about? Don’t worry. Normally, among us, it’s considered rude for a man to pursue a female simply because he wants to. That’s why they’re all so restrained. But if you’re the one who invites them first, they’ll be delighted.”
“I see.”
If they had married later instead, perhaps everyone would have been competing to court her far more aggressively.
At least now she understood Quillon’s situation. His role might be described as seduction, but in practice it simply meant he was talented at many different things, leaving him constantly occupied with one task or another.
Apparently reading Jiwoo’s thoughts, Callan offered one more piece of advice.
“You’re always trying to accommodate everyone else first. Try being a little more forceful at least by your own standards. I guarantee he’d love it.”
Jiwoo wondered if he really meant she should say something that direct like, ‘Drop whatever you’re doing and come spend time with me.’ .
“So, was that the only thing bothering you?”
“Actually no.”
Their conversation had wandered, but that wasn’t the real reason Jiwoo had sought him out.
“You know Asilion said Quillon beat him up. He even brought us such precious honey. I still feel guilty about it, so I think I’d like to send him another gift.”
“I see. Have you thought of anything?”
“Well… there’s something I’ve wanted to try making for a while.”
“Oh?”
Looking genuinely interested and ready to help, Callan leaned in. Jiwoo finally shared the idea that had been on her mind these past few days.
